We Become What We Wear

There is a new adage “We become what we wear.” And that is the subject of Professor Karen Pine’s fascinating book, Mind What You Wear. Her book reveals how the wearing of clothing has measureable performance and self-confidence effects on people.  Pine’s study confirms humans mental processes and perceptions can be primed by clothing.
In an experiment to know whether heroic clothing could really have an unconscious effect on the students’ thought processes, Pine had some of her students put on Superman t-shirts.  The results were very interesting.  She found it boosted their impression of themselves, made them believe they were more likeable and superior to the other students who were not wearing the Superman t-shirt.  When asked to estimate how much they could physically lift, those wearing the Superman t-shirt thought they were stronger than students in a similar t-shirt without the Superman logo.
We project our image to other people through our clothing and our clothing can influence others’ impressions of us.  Likewise our clothes can also influence us, the wearer, affecting our thoughts and moods.  Research has found that clothing is actually priming the brain to function and operate differently. It is called ‘enclothed cognition’.  For example, a hospital patient wearing a shapeless, pale garment, exposed at the back, encourages docile and helpless feelings. Additionally, the feeling of anonymity when wearing a uniform or the emotional and sexy power surge while dressed in Armani suit and Christian Louboutin shoes! My interpretation of Pine’s research: Our self-image begins with clothing and our clothing choices influence our thoughts, moods and perspectives.!
Pine notes that there is a link between mood and clothing, when women are stressed their world narrows down and the result being that as much as 90% of a woman’s wardrobe can be neglected.

Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day is a celebration honoring our maternal bonds.  I welcome the importance of this special day, although I think for the amount of work we mothers do it should be celebrated at least once a month by sleeping until noon followed by a delicious breakfast served in bed.  However, I began to wonder where and how this holiday came about and started to research. 

I discovered during the time of the Civil War, a few trail- blazing women struck by the horrors of war, organized an international peace movement, justly named “Mother’s Day for Peace”. Leaders Anna Jarvis and her daughter Julia Ward Howe intended to expose the tragedies of war and spread peace, equality and justice through activism. Eventually, President Woodrow Wilson would sign the annual Mother’s Day celebration into law.

Today, I realized as I cherish, nurture, protect, embrace, or cultivate a creative project, I acknowledge the mother within me.  Early motherhood was a wonderful time for me. I loved sharing life with my child.  He has taught me much and still does.

TheLuLuwrap is my newest offspring, an idea incubated within and transformed into a wonderful, exciting adventure. I am grateful for your welcomed embrace and as I share beautiful gifts with your wardrobe and style, please know your joyful, satisfied smiles are many times my returned reward. The Luluwrap Naming Contest

Spring is here - my favorite time of the year - and inspiration is all around. Colorful flowers are blooming and the days are stretched for more hours of play!

While venturing thru my favorite fabric store, I fell in love with this colorful silk-chiffon print, just in time for summer. It's instant happiness! The LuLuwrap is great for summer wear. Throw it on after yoga, at beach or pool. I love new fabrics!

Here We Go!

I am very much looking forward to the launch of the LuLuwrap website.  We have been diligently working on getting the site up and running and of course with Mercury retrograde there have been glitches almost daily.  No matter, it’s such an exciting time for me. 

I have been going around to my favorite fabric haunts searching out the most beautiful silk chiffon fabrics and prints for the 2014 Spring/Summer season.  Choosing the material is a very sensory experience for me.  I have to see it, touch it, and hold it up to me before I can make my selections.  I think everyone will be able to find at least one LuLuwrap they must have this season.  I know I want them all!

I make a limited amount of LuLuwraps in each print, so there’s very little chance that you will see your best friend rocking the same LuLuwrap.  I really enjoy the creative process that goes into the finished product, from finding that special button to choosing the colors of the suede lace button loops.  

The LuLuwraps are made with love.

A little over a year ago I designed the LuLuwrap, the stunning silk chiffon, must have wardrobe accessory.  I made a few samples to test them out and pretty soon people were stopping me on the street and asking where I bought my wrap.  I started selling them out of my car and then at private sales and the demand grew and grew. Stylish women soon discovered the beauty of the LuLuwrap, the luxurious fabric, the stunning prints and its versatility.  (The LuLuwrap can be worn 11 different ways!!!). I knew it was the time to introduce the LuLuwrap to the world, so with the help of a brilliant digital marketer, Tiffant Sieber, the Luluwraps website will be launching on March 1.

The spring/summer line will feature an imaginative mixture of colors and combinations.  Retro blooms and global prints as well as geo shapes and swirls are beautiful in the soft pastel and vivid bright palette of this season.  The bursts of color are the ones you will want to be wearing come spring.  Give yourself carte blanche to experiment and create your individual fashion imprint.
